The Guardian Purifier from MSR is a self-cleaning and enduring water purification system that will cover all your bases on your overseas or isolated expeditions.
The Guardian uses a hollow fibre cartridge, which is effective against viruses, bacteria, protozoa and particulate – so you don’t need to use further treatment.
Originally designed to be used for the military, this technology has been honed to make it a simple solution for those exploring remote areas. This unit has an advanced hollow fibre filter, that will reliably treat up to 10,000+ litres of water before it needs a replacement.
This filter will self-clean with every stroke which helps the flow rate to be consistent and eliminates the need to ever backflush or scrub the filter. With a rate of 2.5 litres of water per minute, this system allows you to quickly and efficiently treat water for a larger group of people.
Built to withstand freezing conditions, harsh environments and heavy use – the Guardian is at home on all your rugged adventures where clean drinking water isn’t available.
Effective against viruses (99.99%), bacteria (99.9999%), protozoa (99.9%) and particulate.
Pumps 2.5 litres per minute
Eliminates the need for further light or chemical treatment
Hollow fibre cartridge treats up to 10,000+ litres of water
Designed for heavy use, freezing conditions and other harsh environments
How do I dry the purifier for storage after a trip?
Amy - Coffs Harbour, NSW(3 months ago)
The Guardian Purifier filter should not be dried out at all. Check out MSR's article explaining why here.

Attaching direct to a pro-quip jerry can1 answer
Would this be able to attach direct to a 20L Pro Quip jerry can? What is the thread size? Thanks
floyd - Langhorne Creek, SA(6 months ago)
Great question, but unfortunately not. I've tried this one out in store and the MSR Guardian is too wide to screw onto any jerry can. You can absolutely hold it inplace over the jerry can mouth, but it won't screw on or attach in any way.

Bottle Size1 answer
Which other bottle brands can be attached to the Guardian?
David - Liverpool(1 year ago)
The thread on this water purifier is fairly universal and should suit most wide mouth style bottles. We know it fits the Nalgene Wide Mouth Bottles and all of the current model Camelbak Chute, Eddy, Carry Cap and Chute Mag bottles. Outside of these brands that we carry it's hard to know for sure what will fit.

How do I sterilize the purifier "filter"1 answer
I saw your reply that it seems difficult to buy a replacement purifier filter but that the filter lasts up to 10,000 litres and I can "sterilize" if storing the unit. You say that sterilizing instructions are included BUT this is the last thing I want to know (after a lot of researching water filters for camping).

You can download the user manual directly on the MSR website, they also provide lots of great FAQs if there is anything you need to know. I hope that helps.

Does this filter expire?1 answer
Hey team! Since this filter has such a long lifespan (10,000L), I’m wondering if it has a shelf life? My current purifier has a life of 3 years once opened/used. Since it may take over a decade to use up the Guardian’s 10,000L life, does the MSR Guardian filter have an expiration date? Or is it simply good until you hit that 10,000 Liter mark?
Adriane - Hallam(2 years ago)
The purifier doesn't have a shelf life/expiration date, however, it is recommended that you sterilize the purifier before or after long term storage of the unit - there are instructions for this in the manual.

Replacement Filter 1 answer
what is the replacement filter product?
Blair - 3825(2 years ago)
Hi Blair, there is a replacement available which we would likely be able to get but we don't carry it as a core line. The existing filter lasts 10,000 litres of water so they are not an item in heavy demand.

Does the pump have built in carbon filter?1 answer
Does the pump have built in carbon filter?
Eddy - Epping(2 years ago)
Great question! I've had a chat with the supplier and the Guardian doesn't have a carbon filter as it has the Advanced Hollow Fibre as its filter which treats up to 10,000 litres of water and requires no backflushing or scrubbing! The MSR Miniworks EX microfilter has the carbon component if you were needing this for your travels.

Camelbak Replacement Tubing1 answer
Hi Guys, I’m looking at pumping the purified water from the Guardian directly into my Camelbak Antidote. I’ll do this by using a tube connected to the nipple on the guardian to a quicklink into the bladder tube (unclip the hydrolock bite valve). Can you tell me if the Camelbak tubing slips over the nipple on the guardian to make the idea work?? Cheers Mark
Mark - Inverell (3 years ago)
I've just tested this out and the water outlet nipple on the Guardian Water Purifier is a little smaller than Camelbak Tubing. So you could use it, but it won't create a seal, so you'd have to find a way to secure it to the tubing, or hold it while pumping.

does it remove salt if water is salty in bore water?1 answer
using tap bore water which is very unpleasant to drink
janet - darlington(4 years ago)
The MSR Guardian won't remove salt from water, a filter with a carbon element such as Lifestraw Go 2 may help improve the taste.
